3M Buckley Innovation Centre

The 3M Buckley Innovation Centre (3M BIC) brings together businesses and academia, acting as a catalyst to accelerate and nurture talent, technology and ideas, broadening capability, capacity and scope.

Collaborative working at the centre’s state-of-the-art facilities in Huddersfield leads to new research and development to promote innovation and technology transfer and create an atmosphere of dynamism, entrepreneurship and creativity.

The objectives include ensuring success in national and international markets, encouraging open innovation and a systematic approach to cross-sector collaborations with the University of Huddersfield. 3M BIC houses start-ups, SMEs, and large corporates, with tenants including Borg Warner, Kromek and uniQ Pharma Ltd. Working with a number of innovative tenant companies lends itself to dynamic interactions which promote supply chain and demand led innovation. The centre offers access to finance, markets and technology through a range of commercial, technical and support services.

New ideas and collaborations between the University and industry are supported through Innovation Avenue with its specialist equipment and resources, from 3D printing, a fully equipped workshop and wet chemistry laboratory, high performance computing systems for modelling and visualization and advanced manufacturing. Tenants are encouraged to establish close working relationships with academic and research staff and the centre actively facilitates this partnership with dedicated technical support on hand.

The 3M Buckley Innovation Centre is part-funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), the University of Huddersfield and Kirklees Council.
