Leeds City Region’s Inward Investment team has had a busy few months with a number of international visits, promoting opportunities for global businesses to invest in the largest City Region outside of London.
Leeds City Region attended the Molecular Medicine Tri Conference in San Francisco in February alongside representatives from the University of Leeds to highlight the pivotal role the region is playing in precision medicine both nationally and internationally. During the conference delegates had the opportunity to attend a lecture from Dr Mike Messenger, Head of Personalised Medicine and Health, University of Leeds and Deputy Director, NIHR Diagnostic Evidence Co-operative Leeds.

February also saw Leeds City Region lead a trade delegation to China in order to further accelerate its investment relationships with the second largest economy in the world. The visit saw senior figures Councillor Judith Blake, Council Leader of Leeds City Council and Roger Marsh OBE, Chair of Leeds City Region Enterprise Partnership, visit Hangzhou and Shanghai, meeting with senior government officials and key business leaders. The LEP signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Chinese e-commerce platform Kaola.com to develop a long term collaborative partnership focused on trade opportunities. Kaola.com has a customer base of over eight hundred million users and are currently providing access for over 5,000 new products and brands into the Chinese market. This platform will offer great opportunities for Leeds City Region businesses to export to China and capitalise on the demand for British products among the growing Chinese middle class.
Leeds City Region’s largest ever delegation attended MIPIM 2017, flying directly from Leeds Bradford Airport on 13th March, thanks to the support of Leeds-headquartered airline, Jet2.com. The 90 strong delegation took the opportunity provided by the international investment and development forum to showcase the scale of investment opportunities in the UK’s largest city region economy outside of London to investors, developers and occupiers; in fact the City Region’s MIPIM 2017 campaign reached over 3,308,652 people. The week also saw the launch of GVA’s latest report highlighting that Leeds City Region has a key ‘window of opportunity’ to cement its position as one of the world’s most competitive locations for trade and investment.
