Selby

Experian strategies ranked Selby as the third most profitable town in a recent survey. It also has over twice the share of manufacturing output in the Yorkshire and Humber area. Companies like Rank Hovis, Supercook, Westmill Foods, Tate & Lyle and three breweries (Sam Smiths, John Smiths and Coors) in Tadcaster mean food and drink dominates its manufacturing output.

Over 70% of the district’s 76,500 strong population is economically active, mainly in the retail trade, manufacturing industry and business support service sectors. And quality of life in the North Yorkshire district is ranked higher than towns like Oxford, Durham and Bristol according to the Experian Quality of Life Index, based on measures of health, education and crime.

Selby has excellent congestion-free road links with the A1(M), M1 and the M62. In fact major road logistics companies like Excel and Eddie Stobart already run busy transport operations from the district. Selby also lies on the direct mainline to London, with a typical journey time of 150 minutes to the capital.

Business in the district also gains from two official channel tunnel terminals nearby; Doncaster International Railport and Wakefield Europort. Goods shipped from the Europort arrive in Europe within 24 hours, making it a prime location for import and export to European markets.

Selby College is the only training provider in North Yorkshire to be awarded the government’s prestigious CoVE status (Centre of Vocational Excellence) for advanced skills in ICT. And the Selby district workforce has higher than average employment in occupations including managers and senior officials, skilled trade occupations and process, plant, and machine operatives.

New investment opportunities in Selby district include the Sherburn Enterprise Park with its recently completed network centre. The development has already attracted major food and packaging companies like Linpac, Constar and Cromwell Polythene.
